Safe Womanhood-Kenya is a legally registered Community Based Organization (CBO) established in 2003, with the objective of curbing the many injustices faced by the girl child - and women in general - with emphasis on reproductive health. Our target population has been the refugee community living in Nairobi, comprising of Somalis, Ethiopians and Sudanese who've ran away from their war-torn homes to seek refuge, something that has really left them vulnerable and helpless.
Many have no formal jobs, education or someone to depend on either locally or abroad. These have denied them a chance to meet their daily basic needs and medical services - being a privilege for the few. Since its inception, Safe Womanhood Organization has mainly dealt with activities biased to reproductive health, through creating supportive environments for information dissemination, capacity building and networking for its beneficiaries and other stakeholders enabling them to respond swiftly and effectively to the reproductive health needs of the target community.
The organization also conducts free medical checkups with the aim of reaching out with its medical intervention to the underprivileged refugee populations.

Ensure that refugee women and girls in Nairobi have access to comprehensive, high-quality reproductive health services, including education, contraception, maternal care, and preventative screenings, by establishing safe, accessible medical clinics and outreach programs.
Equip refugee women and girls with knowledge and skills on reproductive health, self-care, and gender equality through workshops, training sessions, and community engagement to enable them to make informed decisions about their bodies and futures.
Provide a safe and supportive environment where survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) can seek help, receive counseling, and access legal assistance, while also conducting awareness campaigns and advocacy to prevent GBV within refugee communities.
Empower refugee women with vocational training, entrepreneurship opportunities, and capacity-building programs that enhance their economic independence and reduce their vulnerability to exploitation and abuse.
Develop partnerships with local and international stakeholders, including healthcare providers, government agencies, and humanitarian organizations, to build a robust support network that addresses the holistic needs of refugee women and girls.
Conduct regular free medical checkups and health interventions for underprivileged refugee communities to reduce mortality and morbidity rates related to preventable and treatable health conditions, particularly for reproductive health and maternal care.
Advocate for policy reforms at the national and local levels that improve healthcare access, education, and legal protections for refugee women and girls, and work to ensure that their rights are recognized and upheld by all relevant institutions.
Provide mental health support, including counseling services and community programs, to address the trauma, stress, and emotional burdens faced by refugee women and girls, helping them to heal and thrive in their new environments.
Foster a culturally sensitive approach in all programs that respects the diverse backgrounds of Somali, Ethiopian, Sudanese, and other refugee communities, while promoting gender equality and women’s rights within these cultural frameworks.
By pursuing these objectives, Safe Womanhood-Kenya aims to create lasting change in the lives of refugee women and girls, helping them move from survival to empowerment and building a stronger, healthier community for generations to come.
